Comment parlons-nous d'alcool à nos patients?

C'est ce que se sont demandé des médecins de Seattle, dans cet article publié en 2006.

Ils ont enregistré pendant plusieurs mois des entretiens entre des patients et leur médecin généraliste, sans préjuger du motif de consultation, en étudiant ensuite les passages où le sujet « alcool » était abordé. L'article contient des retranscriptions exactes de certains passages. Même en tenant compte d'une possible différence culturelle vis-à-vis de l'alcool, ces morceaux choisis sont édifiants. Quelques exemples parmi d'autres :

 

Médecin : « So maybe plain Tylenol would be a better choice…

Patient : ... I was worried about my liver on that. You said it’s bad for your liver and then...

Médecin : I’m more concerned...

Patient : Well, I’ve been boozing.

Médecin : I know. I’m more concerned about your kidney function...”

Only reference to alcohol during this visit.

J’espère que le patient n’est pas cirrhotique...

 

Médecin : « But how do you feel about your – your drinking? Do you – do you – do you....

Patient : What do you mean by that?

Médecin : Do you think like – do you feel like you drink more than you should or do you think it's just a reasonable amount or...

Patient : Well, I know I do drink more than I should. »

Bon. Au moins le patient sait ce qu'il fait, lui.

 

Et ma préférée :

Médecin : « Um, and uh, one of the other things that we had talked about in your follow-up visits is uh, um, is uh, you know, talked about the alcohol and uh, uh... »

Et donc vous en êtes où avec l'alcool?
